Description

The Cave Nebula, Caldwell 9, Sharpless 2-155 is a diffuse nebula in the constellation Cepheus, within a larger nebula complex containing emission, reflection, and dark nebulosity.  It is 2,400 light years from earth and has an ionized H II region with ongoing star formation activity.  The name "Cave Nebula" was coined for this object by Patrick Moore, who created the Caldwell list of 110 objects.  He could not use the "M" in his last name, otherwise it would have been confused with the M-objects catalogued by Charles Messier, so he used a "C" for Caldwell, his double-barreled surname, born to Capt. Charles Trachsel Caldwell-Moore.
